    Legendary cow ‘Big Bertha’ became a local celebrity when she passed away on New Eve’s 1993 at a farm in Co Sneem.

    Bought as a calf by farmer Jerome O’Leary, Bertha died just three months shy of her 49th birthday, having given birth to 39 calves.

    Her life’s achievement earned her an entry in the Guinness Book of Records - and her legend now lives on in a unique Irish gin which is gaining global recognition.

    This is part of the Irish Gin & Tonic Fest 2017 which runs from 25 June to 01 July 2017. The Irish Gin & Tonic Fest is a nation-wide celebration of Irish Craft Gin & Tonic with gin-related events taking place in venues up and down the country. Our contribution will be to host Bertha tipples, Ukulele tunes and dinner at Ballyvolane House on Saturday, 01 July 2017.

    When Brian McGinn, one of the producers of the award-winning Netflix series Chef’s Table, was visiting Ireland in search of new stories two weeks ago, Ballyvolane House was one of the places he visited. Co-incidentally, two days later, Bertha’s Revenge, the small batch Irish milk gin that is distilled at Ballyvolane House by owner Justin Green and his business partner Antony Jackson, was awarded a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the most influential in the industry.

  • Gold Medal Award from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017

    We are delighted and proud that Bertha won a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017.

    The 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition was held at the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco from April 20th through April 23rd. The 2017 Competition was another record-breaking year that featured 2,253 spirit entries from all corners of the world.

  • Charity Long-Table Lunch & Garden Tour in aid of Habitat for Humanity at Ballyvolane House

    This June, Justin’s son Toby (aged 16) and a group of classmates are heading to Armenia for two weeks during their summer holidays with Habitat for Humanity. They will be building houses in some of the most deprived areas of the country which are in urgent need of basis housing. In order for this to happen, he has to raise €2,500. As part of his fundraising effort, we will be hosting a long-table lunch, Bertha tipples and a stroll around the gardens with Jeremy Green (Toby’s grandpa) at Ballyvolane House on Saturday, 13 May 2017.

  • Old Butter Roads Food Trails

    The Old Butter Roads Food Trail is up and running following a sunny (mainly!) weekend with the launch taking place in the Blarney area. The event was officially opened on Saturday, 29th April 2017 in the Church of Ireland by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Creed. We are delighted that Bertha’s Revenge Gin is a member of this new exciting group celebrating the artisan food and drinks produced in our locality.
