National Biodiversity Week Ireland 2023
National Biodiversity Week Ireland 2023 Ireland runs from 19th to 28th May.
We are always trying to improve our biodiversity here at Ballyvolane House and we have around 20 hectares of woodland and four lakes which provide pristine and safe habitats for birds, red squirrels, amphibians and pollinators. We preserve and protect these biodiversity friendly habitats and we have created some new ones too. We have added some waterfowl nesting tubes (see photo above) to our lakes which provide safe nesting boxes for moorhens and mallard. We have also recently sown 4.5 hectares of winter bird food (mix of spring wheat, linseed, white mustard, phacelia and oilseed radish) which will sustain and feed an abundance of our resident songbirds throughout the winter months. We have erected numerous bird nesting boxes and bat boxes around the estate too. We also planted 300 native trees last year.

Coronation Cocktail
As London prepares for King Charles III’s coronation on 6th May, as if anyone could ever forget! But one needn’t line up along the Mall to mark the moment in style. Instead, why not flee the madness and escape to one of his favorite hotels around the world?
Ballyvolane House (our home) and Bertha’s Revenge Gin were featured in Airmail in an article entitled ‘Sleeping Around’ by Katie Bowman about King Charles’ favourite getaways. Although Elvis is king in this house, we do fondly remember his stay at Ballyvolane House in 2018 and we would like to congratulate him on his coronation and wish him every success in his new job!

Bertha at Ballymaloe May Fair
Bertha’s Revenge Gin has taken a stall at the Ballymaloe May Fair over the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th May. We have been to the Ballymaloe May Fair ourselves as punters in the past and it is a fantastic day out for all the family. The event is located at the stunning Ballymaloe House with incredible food trucks, workshops, cookery demos and a dizzying array of stall holders selling all sorts of curiosities from antiques to Irish crafts to artisan gin. Come and have a gin-wag with Justin who will be there throughout the weekend. Justin will be sharing Bertha tipples and the ‘full herd’ of Bertha’s Revenge Gin will be on sale.
